First time on a board? We pick the wave and the spot for you

On your first day, what matters most is standing up on the right wave in the right place. That's our job: a soft spot that suits beginners, at the right tide, and a local coach in the water with you for the whole lesson.

Coach pushing a beginner's board into a small wave in clear water

Why learn with us

  1. We pick waves that suit beginners

Small, soft waves that are easy to catch and stand up on. We know where they are in every season: almost everywhere from June to August, and on the softer spots from late September to November, while the best waves of the year break further out.

  2. We pick the right spot

The spot is set on the morning of your lesson, by your level, the tide and the wind. Beginners learn with us at places like Jacking Horse and Daku, and never at Cloud 9.

  3. A personal coach in the water, the whole lesson

Your coach stays next to you in the water and pushes your board into the wave at the right moment. All you have to think about is standing up.

  4. The first pop-up, in the first lesson

It usually happens in the first two hours, because the right wave and a well-timed push do most of the work.

  5. Two hours in the water, one price

₱1,200 for a two-hour lesson, board included. No surprises. The boat on good-wave days is ₱300 more.

  6. Local coaches

Francis, Michael and Glenn teach on the breaks around General Luna. They message you where to meet, with the day's conditions already worked out.

  7. See yourself surf

A local drone photographer can film your lesson, and we'll put you in touch. You see from above what worked, and you keep a clip of your first wave.

Your first lesson, step by step

  1. WhatsApp Michael

The message is already written. Then add the day, the time and your level, for example: I've never surfed before.

  2. We pick the wave and the spot

On the morning of the lesson, by the tide and the wind. We message you where to meet.

  3. A few minutes on the sand

How to lie on the board, how to paddle, how to pop up. Short, then into the water.

  4. Two hours in the water

Small waves, your coach next to you telling you when to stand. On good days you take the boat to a spot further out.

Good to know before your first session

Every wave in Siargao breaks over reef, including the ones that feel like a soft beach break. That’s why your coach picks the spot and the time by the tide, and why it’s worth listening when he tells you where to stand and where not to.

Beginner lessons have not been allowed at Cloud 9, the island’s famous wave, since July 2025. You can still walk out on the boardwalk to watch; the lesson happens on softer breaks. The details are in can beginners surf Cloud 9.

What to bring

Swimwear, sunscreen (ideally reef-safe), water, and a rash guard if you have one. The board is included.

Before you come

When you’re ready, the green button opens a WhatsApp chat with Michael.

Can I learn to surf with no experience at all?

Yes. Plenty of our students have never stood on a board. We start on soft breaks, with small waves and a personal coach in the water.

When is the best time to come as a beginner?

Any month. June to August has the softest waves, and late September to November brings the best waves of the year. In every season we pick a spot that suits beginners.

How do you choose the spot?

By three things: your level, and that morning's tide and wind. A spot that works well one day can be flat or too strong the next, so we decide on the day.

What if I don't stand up in the first lesson?

It happens, and that's fine. Every try gets you closer, and your coach fixes whatever went wrong on the last wave. Most students stand up in their first lesson.
