Rock Island is a fast, steep right over reef off the General Luna area of Siargao. It is about 15 minutes away by boat and suits strong intermediate to advanced surfers. The upper end of the intermediate range is the useful distinction here.
The wave
Speed and a steep face are the defining features of this right. They explain why the Fat Lips rating starts at upper intermediate. Experience on a slower wave does not by itself establish that Rock Island will be a good fit.
The bottom is reef. Assess the wave with a local coach before going out, and describe your experience with faster take-offs when discussing the session.
Who it’s for
This is a spot for experienced surfers. Some guides give a broader ability range, but we use the more cautious strong-intermediate-to-advanced rating.
For a left reached by boat, compare Stimpy’s. Daku has a slower right and a soft take-off, with beginners needing an instructor. The two rights serve different stages of learning.
Getting there and paying for the boat
The boat trip takes approximately 15 minutes each way. Confirm the launch point when arranging the outing.
The Fat Lips estimate is around ₱250 per person return, with a minimum of two passengers. This comes from an undated guide, so treat it as a planning estimate. Agree on the full fare before getting into the boat, including what is charged if there are fewer than two of you and how the return is arranged.
When it works
Rock Island is a swell-season spot. It is also among the sheltered options during the late December to March northeast monsoon period. June to August is generally flat here. Winter shelter can help make a session possible, but the fast, steep wave still calls for experience.
